The Basilica of Glorious St. Mary of Frari (Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari), usually just called the “Frari”, is one of the greatest churches in the city and it has the status of a minor basilica. It stands on the Campo dei Frari at the heart of the San Polo district.
After the Basilica of St. Mark’s, the Basilica of St. Mary of Frari is the most remarkable ecclesiastical complex in Venice, as well as being one of the most important Franciscan foundations in Italy.
Of the many masterpieces and monuments from Renaissance artists and sculptors, the most significant painting is Titian’s 1518 Assumption of the Virgin, which is set over the altar and changed painting forever with its innovative style and bright colors. In addition, side chapels are full of more art and the main church houses the tombs of significant wealthy Venetians. Titian himself is buried here in an impressive tomb, while sculptor Antonio Canova has a pyramid-shaped monument.
